Was Muhammad Shown a Physical Path?

ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَاطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Opening Investigation

Could remembered guidance also preserve the memory of a physical route?

That question is where this research began.

Not with hydrology. Not with GIS. Not with sacred stones. With a simpler question: whether something remembered as guidance might also preserve the memory of a physical route through a real world.

Once that question was asked, the earlier prophetic traditions began to look different.

Abraham travels. Ishmael is placed in the wilderness. Jacob crosses the Yabboq. Joseph’s household is driven into Egypt by famine. Moses moves through wells, mountains, settlements, and contested territory.

These stories do not remember prophets moving through abstract religious space. They remember people moving through roads, water sources, river crossings, mountain corridors, settlements, borders, and territories.

This led to the larger question behind We Were Not Looking:

Do the Torah and Qur’an preserve enough geographic memory to reconstruct something of the physical world through which their prophetic traditions move?

Following the Clues Through the Traditions

The question of a real path does not begin with Muhammad. It emerges from the long memory of movement preserved in the earlier traditions, where journeys, exiles, crossings, wells, and sacred sites are repeatedly located within specific landscapes.

Abraham
What does it mean to leave one territory, move through another, establish sacred sites, negotiate access, and receive a covenant involving land and descendants? His movements are remembered within thresholds, ridges, wells, and territorial claims.

Hajar and Ismail
When Abraham leaves Hajar and Ismail in the wilderness, is the place merely narrative setting, or does the remembered geography preserve something about movement, refuge, water, and territorial placement? The wilderness of Fārān is remembered as a place of passage and survival.

Yitzhak and Gerizim
If the tradition places Yitzhak within a specific sacred landscape, what happens when that location is examined in relation to elevation, watershed structure, movement corridors, and later sacred geography?

Jacob and the Yabboq
Why does Jacob’s return culminate at a river crossing before his encounter with Esau? What changes when the Yabboq is treated as a real geographic threshold rather than merely a dramatic backdrop? River crossings are choke points, boundaries, and places where authority is enforced.

Joseph and Famine
What happens when environmental pressure forces a household into the administrative and territorial machinery of Egypt? Famine is not sentiment. It is movement, consolidation, and the reorganization of political power.

Wells
In the ancient world, wells could mark survival, access, negotiation, and territorial claim.

Each of these clues is a fragment of the physical world remembered in the Torah and Qur’an, a world of movement, thresholds, corridors, and contested ground.

Together, they form the investigative spine behind the question now being asked:

If earlier traditions preserve geographic memory of real movement, what does that mean for Muhammad’s remembered guidance?

The Physical World Matters

We Were Not Looking argues that geography is not decoration in the prophetic traditions. It is the structure beneath them, the physical world that shaped movement, covenant, survival, and political authority.

Wells matter because households needed water. River crossings matter because movement had geographic limits. Famine matters because environmental crisis reorganized migration and power. Borders matter because households moved through territories already occupied and governed by others. Sacred places matter because they stood somewhere.

When these narratives are returned to the ground, another layer becomes visible: a remembered physical world connecting movement, covenant, territory, and the pressures that shaped ancient households.

The question that follows is not merely symbolic but geographic:

Were the paths remembered in Scripture only metaphors, or did some of them preserve traces of routes that people could actually walk?

When the Question Reached the Ground

In We Were Not Looking, I proposed the Hydrological Spine Hypothesis, asking whether some of the movements and sacred locations remembered in the patriarchal traditions relate meaningfully to water systems, watershed boundaries, and natural movement corridors.

The claim was geographic: if these narratives preserve physical memory, at least some of their remembered movements and locations should correspond meaningfully with measurable features of the terrain.

After publication, I began separating that geographic proposal from the larger narrative interpretation and testing one part of it independently.

The first controlled GIS case study focused on the Yabboq/Wadi Zarqa basin, where terrain-derived drainage was compared against independent hydrography using both random and terrain-matched controls.

The first validation cycle showed that terrain-derived drainage in the Yabboq study area corresponded with independently mapped hydrography more strongly than both random and terrain-matched expectations.

That provides a reproducible foundation for asking the larger historical-geographic questions separately.

This technical layer provides one testable foundation for the ongoing investigation.

Was Muhammad Shown a Pysical Path?

The current phase of the research asks how the remembered movements of earlier prophetic traditions may help reconstruct the physical world behind that question.

If Abraham, Hajar and Ismail, Yitzhak, Jacob, and Moses preserve geographic memory through wells, ridges, river crossings, migration corridors, and territorial thresholds, then it becomes reasonable to ask whether Muhammad’s remembered guidance can also be examined within a physical geographic frame.

This investigation begins with terrain: the corridors that carried earlier households, the watershed boundaries that shaped movement, and the environmental pressures that reorganized political authority.

The question is whether the traditions surrounding Muhammad’s guidance preserve geographic relationships that can be compared responsibly with the older landscape patterns explored elsewhere in the project.

New investigations will continue through Abraham, Hajar and Ismail, Yitzhak, Jacob, wells, covenant geography, river crossings, migration corridors, and the GIS workflows already underway.
